Abstraction

Abstraction

Abstraction isn’t a style or movement; it can exist in all art to a certain degree. But it can be described as when an artist has removed elements from an object to create a more simplified form or has produced something which has no source in external reality. While an artist can have a real object in mind when painting, that object might become distorted or exaggerated using color and texture to communicate a feeling or emotion rather than replicate the object. It is then more about how shapes and colors can override representational accuracy. The more removed from reality a painting or sculpture is, the more abstract it can be considered.
