Portfolio
This portfolio is an edited, posthumous collection of the artist’s work and is intended to illustrate the creative process which developed over a 60-year span, producing a range of subject matter and stylistic differences. The selected works show the natural unfolding and growth of this largely self-taught artist.
It is noted that much of this work is untitled and undated. In part that is because a painting can start with a recollection or an experience which is what is then painted. Sometimes the very act of doing it becomes the experience. All pictures are full of association. Sometimes titles help the viewer understand the subject matter. Works are undated largely because the artist didn’t feel his work would reach an audience beyond his family and close friends. It’s further noted, particularly in the abstraction sections, that there are thematic groupings or series of works marked by Robert’s use of similar layout and forms. Works in these groupings were often completed at approximately the same time, though certain repeating forms appear in works that were painted years apart. The artwork captions on this website use the symbol “ to denote inches. For example, 16” x 12” indicates 16 inches in height by 12 inches in width.
